Art Class

Kindergarten through 2nd Grade

Art class, kindergarten through second grade, is a yearlong course in which students will learn the basic components that make up a work of art. We will focus on the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, texture, value and form) and will begin to learn about the Principles of Design (pattern, balance, space, variety, repetition, proportion) and understand how to incorporate these elements and principles into a work of art. We explore these elements and principles through songs, stories and videos. Students will develop their fine motor skills while they experiment with various types of media and materials to create art. All lessons are aligned with the National Standards of Visual Arts. We have a yearly art show during Catholic School’s Week that showcase our students’ artwork.

3rd Grade through 4th Grade

Art class, third grade through fifth grade, is a yearlong course in which students will learn the components that make up a work of art. We will review the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, texture, value and form) and will focus on the Principles of Design (pattern, balance, space, variety, repetition, proportion, movement and rhythm). Students will develop a further understanding of how to incorporate these elements and principles into a work of art to create better composition and design. Students will refine their fine motor skills while they experiment with various media and materials to create art. We discuss both art from different time periods and art from other countries and then create projects inspired by the artwork we’ve seen. All lessons are aligned with the National Standards of Visual Arts. We have a yearly art show during Catholic School’s Week that showcase our students’ artwork.
