School Wide Curriculum

Programs

SJA has a multitude of programs geared towards reading, music, cultural arts, science, accelerated learning, and after school activities.

Physical Education

Children and adolescents who participate in physical education at school are more likely to maintain a normal weight as young adults. Quality, physical education in the nation’s schools is an important part of a student’s comprehensive, well-rounded education program and a means of positively impacting life-long health and well-being. The optimal physical education program will foster a lifetime commitment to physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

SLP

All SJA students have access to assistance through specialists at St. Joan of Arc School.  A Special Education teacher, part-time teachers, a Speech Pathologist, and a Social Worker provide our students with the following academic and special needs supports.

Art

The goal of the Art Program at St. Joan of Arc is to present basic art concepts and to allow students of all abilities to express themselves and find enjoyment in art.  Lessons meet the curriculum standards of the Diocese of Joliet with an emphasis on responding to art, developing knowledge and skills in critical thinking, creative production, historical and cultural perspective, and aesthetics.

Music

Students at SJA participate in music classes once a week. In grades Kindergarten through grade two, students participate in vocal and rhythmical activities that incorporate music theory. This includes learning about musical symbols and using them to create music. Students also learn about instruments of the orchestra as well as how the instruments sound.

Spanish

About 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it one of the world's most spoken languages. Language scholars have known for a long time that studying a foreign language can give insights into ones own language. Remaining monolingual stunts educational development and restricts communication and thinking abilities and doesn't allow for full appreciation and understanding of the world in which we live.

Library

We have several great reading programs hosted by the library. All programs are based onmaking reading fun while fulfilling necessary instruction.

Multimedia

The goals of the Multimedia Communications program are to improve the communication skills of our students, to promote cooperative learning, to enable students to discover individual interests and talents, and to expose them to various forms of technology. With the program, our students learn from one another, as they become more confident and competent with the technology they will use in their future careers.

Technology

As a school looking toward the future, SJA administrators and faculty realize that a strong technology department is not only an asset, but a necessity in the school of today.
