Jr. High - Vocabulary
Throughout junior high, vocabulary study is used to enhance the students’ writing, reading, and test-taking skills. The vocabulary strategies introduced allow students to learn how to use context clues to understand the meaning of hundreds of words. Students complete a series of workbook pages followed by an assessment.
The book used in the junior high is the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop. Each grade level completes a new level each year. This series also has an online audio program.
6th Grade:
The sixth grade has three vocabulary classes a week. A unit test occurs every Friday.(unless a change needs to be made) Definitions, Vocabulary in Context, Synonyms and Antonyms, Analogies, and Grammar in Context are all part of the program. Vocabulary will enrich the lives of all students in their verbal and written expression.
7th Grade:
In 7th grade our goal is to improve writing skills and develop speaking skills. Vocabulary is an important aspect in a student’s life to enhance understanding of language. Although it is part of the 7th grade curriculum, most of the vocabulary unit is completed independently. As a class we review important material covered in each chapter.
8th Grade:
Typically, vocabulary units are completed in a two week period. New words are introduced at the beginning of this time, and every effort is made to discuss and incorporate them in the curriculum. Vocabulary class meets one day a week, on Tuesday afternoons. The unit work is corrected and collected one week and the unit test is the following week. Students are expected to complete the work independently, reviewing and applying definitions.
