Jr. High - Literature
The Literature Program for grades 6, 7, and 8 is focused on exposing students to many different types of writing. We read short stories, novels, poetry, newspapers, and biographies. Students will be introduced to a variety of genres and literary techniques. Some examples include characters, plot, conflict, inference, resolution, narrative and many more. This exposure to literature will enhance the student’s usage both written and oral.
6th Grade:
Many literary concepts are introduced and reinforced with a variety of reading selections. Critical thinking and reading skills are developed as they are a necessity for understanding literature. Differentiated instruction is used throughout all lessons to ensure full student participation, knowledge, and comprehension. Along with various types of literature read, novels will also be assigned. Some of the books include Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls and The Red Pony by John Steinbeck.

7th Grade:
Literary concepts are developed more comprehensively and in greater detail each year. Projects and homework are assigned to assess a student’s greater understanding of these concepts. Students will apply all concepts in reading short stories, plays, biographies, and novels. Some of those novels include The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

8th Grade:
Literary concepts are practiced and reviewed. Students are prepared for high school through the use of selected readings from the text book and novels. Projects and writing assignments are given to further enhance a student’s understanding of literary concepts. Some of the novels include To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Homework
Homework will be assigned daily. Written work is always to be completed in pen or on a computer software program, and on time! Work assigned during a student’s absence is to be completed within a reasonable period of time. Grades will be based on test scores, quizzes, homework, and class participation.
