Jr. High - Social Studies
Social Studies incorporate Catholic social justice teachings within the perspective of history.
6th grade:
We begin with world civilizations: ancient Greece, Roman Empire, and the Egyptians. The Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation are studied followed by the Revolutions: French, Russian and Industrial and ending with a brief overview of the American Revolution.
7th grade:
The focus shifts more on the United States. We start with the founding of the 13 colonies and the causes of the Revolution. A more in depth exploration of the American Revolution than in sixth grade is followed by preparation for the federal and state Constitution test. After the Constitution test the causes of the Civil War and the actual Civil War are studied ending the year with the completion of the Civil War.
8th grade:
The goal of the year is to progress thru American history into the early 2000s. The growth of the USA westward from 1865 to 1914, World War I, the 1920s and the Great Depression is the start. After the Great Depression we move into World War 2, the Holocaust and Americas Civil Rights movement from 1954 to the present. Final the Cold war, the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s are studied.
Class work:
Students are expected to have their assigned textbooks, pen, binder, notebook, loose-leaf for each class. During class time a variety of student activities will occur. They are but are not limited to: reading, laptop research, note taking from lecture, DVDs, PowerPoint and overheads. There will also be review games, class projects and quizzes and tests taken during class times.
Homework:
Homework will usually consist of studying notes, reading from the textbook a computer project or a written assignment or paper to be handed in. Occasionally about twice a trimester there may be a larger project than will be assigned at least one week in advance. All work is expected to be neat and spelled correctly with appropriate grammar. Assignments to be turned in on loose-leaf unless otherwise noted and notes to be taken in the Social Studies note book. Grades will be determined by: the quality of homework, test scores, quiz scores and project quality based in the criteria given to student ahead of time.
