We are using the Aimsweb student assessment system at our school to help meet the needs of our students. Today, students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will bring home their Aimsweb results in their Wednesday envelopes. The Aimsweb assessments are used to screen students, assess academic growth, identify those who may need interventions, and drive instruction. Students in 3rd through 5th grades were administered two (eight minute) math assessments called the M-CAP and the M-Comp. Students in 4th and 5th grades were also administered a three minute reading comprehension assessment called the MAZE. These are brief screening tests, but the scores are standardized and national percentiles are given. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you have questions on the assessment results.

Tomorrow begins Lent. In my travels through the internet for lesson planning, I had the wonderful chance to listen to many thoughts about the season. One thought was to remember it as a happy time. Think of the many things you can do for others. Think of the many good changes you can make in yourself. Think of the gift of quiet prayer you can give to yourself during Lent. I like this way of thinking!

I wanted to thank you for the many thoughtful Valentine gifts! The children really enjoyed the many treats you shared with the other children in the classroom. I enjoyed sharing the wonderful gifts you gave to me with my family.

Please remember Ms. Irene in your prayers. She volunteers to help in our kindergarten. She will be having surgery this Friday.

In Religion, we will be attending Mass tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, with our buddies at 10:00. You are welcome to attend.

During Lent, we spend our Religion classes beginning with a Prayer Service. We will make promises to do something special for the season of Lent. We will learn about the meaning of Ash Wednesday and Lent.

Our high frequency words are like, one, and this. We have been reading about Clifford the Big Red Dog and how he shows us an example of a good Catholic Christian. We have also been reading and writing about bears. For art, we have been doing a favorite activity of mine, learning to draw. These lessons correlate with our afternoon reading. The lessons help to build visual and visual/motor integration skills. These lessons also help practice following directions. Wait to you see their bears!!!

Have a wonderful week!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We have a busy three day week ahead. Here’s what’s going on:

Religion

We will go to Mass on Wednesday morning to receive ashes. We will spend time discussing Lent and Ash Wednesday. We will also make sacrifice beads this week during religion. We will continue to learn about the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Math

Both the red fish and the blue fish will work on Chapter 11 this week. The chapter is all about comparing numbers. We will work on making good estimates using a group of ten to help. We will also learn about the greater than and less than symbols. Please continue to work on math facts for a few minutes each night. Homework will come home on Wednesday and will be due next Monday as usual.

Reading

This week we will only have 2 reading classes (due to Mass on Wednesday) so we will NOT have spelling this week. Book bags will NOT come home on Wednesday. Please have your child read on Raz-Kids Wednesday night. Class time this week will be spent reviewing and doing some fun Dr. Seuss activities. Next Friday is Dr. Seuss’ birthday and we will have a fun celebration!

Writing

We have been learning about the 6 traits of writing and so far we have talked about ideas and voice. Next we will be learning about another important trait, word choice. We will read examples of good writing, practice choosing good words and then apply it to our own writing! Ask your first grader about word choice!

Social Studies

This week we will talk about cities, suburbs and farms. We will compare and contrast the different communities.

Have a great week!
