Mrs. Kenney – Week of May 21-25, 2012

REMINDERS:

• Tuesday: No spelling test – new list will be given
• Thursday: Hot Lunch

 
RELIGION: The students will be working in small groups to create a Christian music video using Windows Movie Maker.

 
READING: The students will be finishing up their book projects and begin presenting them to the class.
Accelerated Reader: Please be sure your child is working toward attaining his/her point goal; he/she must meet or exceed it to receive a passing AR grade for the third trimester. Parents can access their child’s goal at https://hosted268.renlearn.com/177005/HomeConnect.
No Reading Log this week!!


ENGLISH: We will continue on with adverbs. The students will have a quiz on Friday in which they will have to identify adverbs in sentences. Please be sure they review the adverb lists in their English notebook- they should have 3 lists: adverbs that tell how, adverbs that tell when, and adverbs that tell where.
WRITER’S WORKSHOP: In the next two weeks, the students will be learning about different types of poetry. Directions for the poetry unit will be sent home on Monday (parent signature required).

 

SPELLING: No spelling test or homework. A new spelling list will be given on Tuesday.


Mrs. Kenney – English/Writer’s Workshop plans for the Week of May 14th have changed

English/Writer’s Workshop: This week the students will be spending the entire English hour writing and revising their Endangered Animal rough drafts. There will not be an adverb quiz on Friday. I apologize; the plans I posted for this week were actually next week’s plans.


Mrs. Kenney- Week of May14-18, 2012

**May 16th is the last day to sign up for volleyball. Try-outs for the fall season will be held this month- NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

 
REMINDERS:

  • Tuesday: Brookfield Zoo Field Trip. Please be sure to pack a disposable lunch including a drink and snack for your child. A BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who volunteered to chaperone (16 parents volunteered!!). In order to be fair to all the students, I selected 8 names in front of the class last week- a letter was sent home to the parents who were chosen. Unfortunately, I was notified over the weekend that one of the chaperones will not be able to attend; therefore, I will choose a replacement on Monday.

RELIGION: This week we will begin creating Christian music videos.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: We will begin studying different types of poetry. This week the students will be creating Diamond poems, also called diamantes, which is a simple format, but challenges them to expand their vocabulary and practice the parts of speech.

SPELLING: The spelling test will be given on Wednesday due to the Brookfield Zoo Field Trip on Tuesday- the homework will also be collected on Wednesday. A new spelling list will go home next Tuesday.

REMINDERS

*Please make sure to return the permission slip and money for our field trip to the Brookfield Zoo.
Chaperones will be notified in this week’s Wednesday envelope.

*If your child is interested in playing volleyball next year, be sure to sign him/her up by May 16.
Tryouts for next season will be held at the end of the May; therefore, they will not be accepting late registrations.

Tuesday: no spelling test

Thursday: Please be sure your child brings a recorder for music. Spanish homework due.

• Friday:  May Crowning at 1:00 p.m.  No reading  log.

RELIGION: This week we will finish up our unit on the Beatitudes and begin a special project
for the wonderful moms in our lives.

READING:

• All the students were given their mystery novel and assigned reading. I will
continue to meet with each group on a regular basis until the book is finished
and the mystery is solved (check your child’s bookmark for the assigned reading
and date of next meeting)

In order to take part in the group discussion, students must have:

• read the assigned chapters

• a written summary of each chapter• a list of clues

The students should write the
summaries, suspects and clues on the forms found in their detective case file.

They will NOT be
required to complete their reading logs during our study of the mystery genre.

ENGLISH: We will continue our study of adverbs; our focus this week will be on adverbs that
tell when and where.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: The students will create a cartoon strips.

SPELLING: No spelling test or homework this week.  A new list will be given on Tuesday.

• All the students were given their mystery novel and assigned reading. I will continue to meet with each group on a regular basis until the book is finished and the mystery is solved (check your child’s bookmark for the assigned reading and date of next meeting)

 
In order to take part in the group discussion, students must have:
• read the assigned chapters
• a written summary of each chapter
• a list of suspects and why
• a list of clues
The students should write the summaries, suspects and clues on the forms found in their detective case file.

 
They will NOT be required to complete their reading logs during our study of the mystery genre.

 
ENGLISH: We will begin Unit 7, Adverbs; our focus this week will be identifying adverbs in sentences and recognizing whether an adverb tells how, when, or where about the verb.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: The students will be writing/typing the final draft of their persuasive essay.

SPELLING: All students will have homework (Monday) and a test (Tuesday) on the words from their detective dictionary.
