The Class of 2B-May 19,2012

It’s hard to believe that there is only a few weeks left of school! Summer is in the air! Congratulations to all the second graders who made their First Communion! They all looked so beautiful! Many thanks goes out to all the parents for all the hard work that went with preparing their children for their special day!

READING: The Red Group will be on Day 1 of Lesson 5. The story is called “The School News.” The Spelling Words are: 1. clock 2. drink 3. moved 4. working 5. hopped 6. folded 7. stain 8. layer 9. team 10. slow 11. toast 12. ladies 13. flies 14. bushes 15. games. The Robust Vocabulary are: viewers, survive, camouflage, concealed, independent, donated, media, feature, image, popular. Please refer to your vocabulary packet that was sent home. This weeks story is a Readers’ Theater story so there will only be 15 Spelling Words. The Homework for Monday, 5/21/12 will be posted on Think Central and is due on Tuesday, 5/22/12. The Homework for Wednesday, 5/23/12 will be to read the story “The School News” out loud to you. The Weekly and Spelling Test will be on Friday, 5/25/12.

MATH: The Stars will have their Chapter 22 Test on Tuesday, 5/22/12. The Unit 8 Test will be on Wednesday, 5/23/12. I will be intoducing the third grade book and reviewing some concepts with the group. Please continue practicing Addition and Subtraction facts up to 20. I’ve noticed some children need to practice a little more to get these facts memorized. Please continue signing and returning your child’s timed tests on Tuesdays. This is so I can keep track where they are and for you to see how they are doing.

The Stripes will have their Chapter 19 Test on Wednesday, 5/23/12. They will then be moving on to Numbers through 10,000. Please continue practicing Addition and Subtraction facts up to 20. I’ve noticed that many children still need more practice on memorizing their facts. Please continue to sign and return your child’s timed tests on Tuesdays. This is so I can keep track where your child is at in the memorizing process. This is also for you, so you can see where your child is at.

RELIGION: We will be discussing how we share God’s love with others. We will also be discussing why Jesus gave us the Beatitudes. We are also praying the Rosary daily as a class.

SCIENCE: 2A and 2B will be discussing the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Red and White Groups will be having D.E.A.R. time outside during Reading to enjoy some of this beautiful weather! The class of 2B will also be having D.E.A.R. outside. I am encouraging the children to check out Library books from the Public Library, since the SJA LIbrary is no longer letting books to be checked out for the year. My goal is to allow each child to reach their goal for AR. Some have met their goal already! We will then have a celebration in class for AR achievement! Please make sure your child is bringing books in to read.

ODDS and ENDS:
The children write in their daily journals every Friday to tell you about all the things they have been learning all week. I encourage you to write back to them. They really get excited about this and are eager to show me.

2B is in need of paper towels and Kleenex again. I would appreciate if your child can bring some in with them.

THANK YOU!!!! to all of the parents who volunteered for our field trip to Legoland! It is such a nice feeling to work in such a wonderful place with parents who take such an interest in their children!

The Children of 2B-May 10, 2012

The Children did a wonderful job with First Communion! I’m so proud of them! I know the children making their First Communion this weekend will do the same!

MATH: The Stars are still working on Subtraction of Three-Digit Numbers.

The Stripes are working on Multiplication and Division.

Please continue practicing Addition and Subtraction facts up to 20 each night for at least 10 minutes for both groups. Multiplication and Division flash cards are encouraged for both groups to have. I encourage your child to have their Addition and Subtraction facts up to 20 memorized before entering into third grade. This will make the transition so much easier.

RELIGION: The children will have a Chapter 21 Quiz on Thursday, 5/17/12. We have been discussing receiving the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in class. We are also practicing the proper way to receive this Holy Sacrament. We are praying the Holy Rosary as a class daily. The children will have an opportunity to bring their Rosary to the May Crowning on Friday, May 11th. Group II will be making their First Communion on Sunday, May 13th. Please have your child at school at the lower level on Saturday, May 12th at 9:00a.m. for practice. You may then pick up your child in the church at 10:30a.m. Your child should be at their assigned classroom on the lower level at 1:30p.m. on Sunday, May 13th for the Liturgy. Your child’s name will be posted outside the classrooms to show your child where they will go. This will be a beautiful day!

SCIENCE: 2A and 2B will be discussing the Different Properties of Matter.

ODDS and ENDS: Please keep encoraging your child to reach their goal for AR. All of the children are working very hard!

Hands-On Science will be this week for both 2A and 2B.

Monday, May 14th is the field trip.

We will be including the yearly assessment for the second grade material this week and next week.

Please keep practicing math facts up to 20 in Addition and Subtraction. We have almost met our goal! Remember-to practice each night for about 10 minutes. This will make the transition to third grade math much easier for your child.

The Stripes will have their Chapter 18 Test on Wednesday, 5/9/12. Also they will be taking a Unit 7 Test on Thursday, 5/10/12. They will then be moving on to Multiplication and Division. Please feel free to purchase Multiplication and Division flash cards for extra practice. Please keep practicing math facts up to 20 in Addition and Subtraction. Remember-to practice each night for about 10 minutes. This will make the transition to third grade math much easier for your child.

RELIGION: The day is finally here! The second graders will be making their First Communion! They are well prepared and very excited! Group I should meet at school on Saturday, May 5th at 9:00a.m. to the lower level. You can pick your child up at 10:30a.m. in the church. Your child shoud be at their assigned classroom on the lower level at 1:30p.m. on Sunday, May 6th for the First Communion. Names will be posted outside the classrooms to show where your child will go. The same times and places also are the same for Group II for May 12th and May 13th. This last week we have been practicing praying the Rosary together. We will continue practicing this week. We will then be discussing how close Jesus is to us in Holy Communion. We will also be reviewing the seasons of the Church Year.

SCIENCE: 2A and 2B will have a Chapter 8 Quiz on Earth and Space. 2B will have their Quiz on Tuesday, 5/8/12. 2A will have their Quiz on Thursday, 5/1012. A study guide will be going home with your child this week. Please review the information on the study guide with your child.

ODDS and ENDS: Please keep encouraging your child to reach their goal for AR. They are all doing a fine job! May 9th will be the last day your child will have a chance to check out books from the SJA library for the year. So, I am encouraging you to take your child to the local library to check out books in their range so they can reach their goal.

May 11th will be our May Crowning at 1:00p.m. All are welcome!

May 9th will will have Arts Alive!

May 14th will be our Field Trip! (play clothes and disposable lunches are encouraged)

First Communion

To all the parents of second grade-The correct time for First Communion practice on Saturday, May 5th is from 9:00a.m.-10:30a.m. for Group I.
The time for Group II practice for Saturday, May 12th is from 9:00a.m.-10:30a.m. The Liturgy will start at 2:00p.m. on Sunday, May 6 and Sunday, May 13. Please have your child in their assigned rooms by 1:30p.m. on the Sunday they are celebrating their Communion.

The Robust Vocabulary are: zoom, enthusiast, historical, fantastic, impressive, delay, spare, upbeat, inexplicable, itinerary. Please refer to your packet that was sent home. The Weekly and Spelling Test will be on Friday, 5/4/12. The Homework for Monday, 4/30/12 will be posted on Think Central and is due on Tuesday, 5/1/12. The Homework for Wednesday, 5/2/12 will be to read the story “Cross Country Vacation” out loud to you.

MATH: The Stars will be having their Chapter 20 Test on Tuesday, 5/1/12 and then moving on to Adding Three-Digit Numbers. The children are doing a great job with Multiplication and Division facts!

The Stripes will be having their Chapter 17 Test on Wednesday, 5/2/12. Then they will be moving on to Weight, Capacity, and Temperature. A good way to practice this concept at home is to have your child help out in the kitchen measuring a variety of items. Or if you prefer to have them make something using measuring is always a good hands-on activity to help them become familiar with measuring.

Please continue practicing Addition and Subtraction facts up to 20 each night for at least 10 minutes for both groups. This is very crucial before they enter the third grade. Of course the same must be done over the summer, so your child will stay sharp in their skills.

RELIGION: The children will have a Chapter 20 Quiz on Tuesday, 5/1/12. We are discussing the prayers of the First Holy Communion. We are also practicing the proper way to receive the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in class. We will be working on our Religion journals by responding to the question-How does God want us to treat others? Mrs. Brochmann will be visiting our class on Wednesday, 5/2/12 to practice receiving the Holy Eucharist and talking with the children about this very special day. Hopefully this should make the children more at ease when they receive our Lord for the first time. Also, make-up interviews for the First Holy Communion will be on Wednesday, 5/2/12.

IMPORTANT DATES: Group 1 Practice for the First Communion will be on Saturday, 5/5/12 at 8:30 a.m. Your child should report to the first floor of the school, where the Art Room is located. There you will see what room your child will be assigned for practice and their First Holy Communion. Group 1-First Communion will be on Sunday, 5/6/12 at 2 p.m. Please make sure your child arrives at 1:15 p.m. before the Liturgy. Group 2- practice for the First Communion will be on Saturday, 5/12/12 at 8:30 a.m. Your child should report the same place as Group 1. Group 2- First Communion will be Sunday, 5/13/12 at 2 p.m. Please make sure your child arrives at 1:15 p.m. before the Liturgy. I am looking forward to being a part of your child’s special day! They will always remember this day as being the most important day of their lives! Also, I want to thank you for all your support in preparing your child for the Holy Eucharist!

SCIENCE: 2A and 2B will be discussing the Moon and the Stars of the Solar System.

ODDS AND ENDS: Please keep encouraging your child to read to reach their goal for AR. They will be going to the Library on Monday, 4/30/12 to choose books to read in their range.

Progress reports should have gone home last Wednesday in the Wednesday envelope. If you have not signed and returned them, please do so this week.
