2nd grade

English/Language Arts

Second grade is a year of highly visible progress in English and language arts. Reading fluently, expanding vocabulary, applying more complex phonics strategies and comprehension are the focus of our reading instruction.

In writing, the students are taught to write competently for many purposes using the six researched components of all good writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions)

Math

Second grade focuses on four critical areas: extending understanding of base-ten notation; building fluency with addition and subtraction; using standard units of measure; and describing and analyzing shapes.  Our curriculum relies on lessons with interactive activities, reinforcement exercises, assessments and the use of math manipulatives in order to provide a concrete foundation for learning abstract ideas.

Religion

Second graders learn more about God, themselves, their families, Church, and Jesus.  A good deal of time is spent preparing the children’s minds and hearts to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

Science

Our FOSS program is a research-based curriculum designed to make active learning in science engaging for all students.  Students learn science by doing science. They construct an understanding of science concepts through their own investigations and analyses, using laboratory equipment, student readings, and interactive technology.

Social Studies

In second grade, students discover how their community works as well as the variety of ways that communities organize themselves. They learn to recognize and describe how people within their community, state, and nation are both similar and different.

Second graders also learn how to use geographic tools and skills to locate and describe places on Earth.
